20th Anniversary
Curriculum

Parents are welcome to observe our classrooms. It will be immediately noticeable that our classrooms offer a rich array of specially designed materials and resources. The materials and resources address and meet the wide range of interests, abilities and skills of the mixed-age groups working in the Montessori prepared environment. The joyful pursuit of knowledge is obvious as it radiates from our students.

The goal of PMEI is to provide an educational environment that serves the whole child, where he/she can grow intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically. PMEI’s focus in curriculum is to provide high interest and strong challenge within a dynamic and experiential environment. Each student is educated using an individualized plan developed by the teacher. This plan is based upon the child’s demonstrated skills and abilities.

Music
Primary/ Kindergarten - Our music class meets thirty minutes, once a week. Early childhood music classes at PMEI will introduce children to the Orff process of experiencing music. Primary - Library is offered to our primary students every other week. The children come into the library with their class to learn about library related topics: how to take care of a book, how to check out a book, how to find books, and more. After each lesson a story time will follow. Each visit to the library the students will select and check out a book to keep in their classroom library.

Spanish
Primary/ Kindergarten - The introductory Spanish Curriculum at PMEI will instill in the beginning student a sense of enjoyment of the Spanish language as well as an appreciation for the Spanish culture. Through games, songs, craft and art activities, the students will be exposed to the Spanish experience. Utilitarian Spanish will be achieved through call and response activities, songs, rote memorization, and daily drilling. Spanish vocabulary will be introduced and then built upon at higher levels in subsequent classes. Props used to teach and reinforce lessons at this level include puppets, toys and popular music.

Elementary - The focus of this curriculum is to expose the student to the fundamental basics of the Spanish language, as well as the varied Spanish cultures throughout the world.  This curriculum will continue to build on skills acquired in earlier Spanish classes and introduce new activities that expose students to common terminology as well as activities unique to various Spanish speaking countries.  Exposure to phrases related to everyday experiences will be heard, repeated and reinforced through limited conversation and written expression.  Music, ethnic food, cultural holidays and activities will enhance the student’s appreciation of the Spanish culture.  Hands-on activities will bring an added dimension to the learning process.  This balanced approach to Spanish will give the interested student who plans to continue studying Spanish at a higher level, a firmer foundation and deeper understanding of the Spanish language and culture.

Physical Education
Primary/ Kindergarten - The PE curriculum includes skills and concepts to enhance physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development. For example, we ask questions to encourage cognitive development, encourage taking turns to enhance affective development, and work on colors by using colored bean bags, balls and hoops in activities. Predominant teaching strategies involve movement exploration stations, guided discovery, and creative problem solving. Our movement exploration stations provide children with choices, so that children can seek out the stimuli they need to nourish their developmental abilities.

Elementary - The elementary physical education program includes movement exploration, perceptual motor stations, and fundamental motor skills which are locomotor, non-locomotor, and body management skills. In addition, the students experience different ways to improve personal fitness and lifetime sports. Many sports are introduced through lead up games and activities. Physical education units also include integration games for math, science, language and our character and ethics disciplines.

Visual Art
Kindergarten - This art program will provide activities that develop basic skills using materials and tools such as pencils, markers, paint and paper.  Art projects will include skills in identifying and creating lines, colors, shapes, texture, form and dimension, shading and hi-lighting.  Students will learn to draw what they see and color within those shapes.  Use of various mediums will be used to achieve successful drawings, paintings, collages, prints and three-dimensional projects.

Elementary - The Lower Elementary art program includes acquiring basic skills using a variety of mediums for drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and sculpture.  Students will learn how to create art based on their interpretation, experiences and imagination.  They will learn about art history, different cultures, various artist styles and types of art.  Positive attitudes about art and their work are emphasized.  Lessons are based upon building previously acquired skills with emphasis on principles of design in two and three dimensional from, pattern, unity, balance, proportion, color combining and creative design.  They begin to recognize specific use of tools and mediums, solve artistic problems with insight and technical skills in combination with concepts and ideas resulting in creative works of art.
